Why #nakedinnature?

Why #nakedinnature?

As mentioned in our previous blog, we are out to change the way society observes nudity and the naked body. It is seen as inappropriate and sexual when there is no need for that. We also believe that due to this opinion, we have created a world of body shaming and judgement where we not only condemn the people that don’t look amazing in swimwear, but also those who are comfortable naked. So unless you look like Zac Efron or Margot Robbie, you have probably experienced some insecurities and embarrassment in regards to your figure. This is not to say that the people that do look like perfect 10 models have never had any body image problems, they probably have worse issues than most of us, but the point is we all have body issues due to societies ridiculous standards and I believe we have a way to change it.

Some people say that the best way to deal with your fears and phobia’s are to tackle them head on. If you have a fear of spiders, letting a tarantula crawl on you (in a controlled environment of course) and it may help you overcome it. If you have a fear of rollercoasters, the best way to overcome it may be to jump on one and go for a ride. If you have a stutter, a fantastic way to help may be to engage in some public speaking within a supportive environment. I’m not saying this is the way to do it for everyone, but it has helped plenty of people in the past.  This is where the ‘naked in nature’ concept comes in. We’ve all had that dream where we are in a public place naked and everyone is staring at you. Its horrifying. It is unlikely that this will ever happen to you, but being seen naked by other people is normally a scary concept and one that we actively avoid. Why do we do this? I believe it’s due to our fear of being judged and scrutinised and made to feel horrible about ourselves. However, if you are able to put yourself into a situation where you are naked in public but in a controlled environment, it’s actually not that bad. It’s quite the opposite in that it’s extremely liberating. Going on a hike to a waterfall, mountain lookout or secluded swimming hole and stripping off to your bare skin is such an incredible feeling. It is hard to explain, but it’s so freeing. In a moment of complete vulnerability where you are exposing yourself to the world you begin to wonder what all the fuss is about. You are naked at least two times a day to shower (well we hope you are), but are very rarely naked outside of the comforts of your own bedroom or bathroom. This is where the challenge and concept of being naked in nature helps you step out of your comfort zone and take a huge step forward in loving the skin you’re in. Anyone can be naked in their bedroom, this isn’t going to help you overcome much. Stepping out of your comfort zone, and getting naked outside will. I can nearly guarantee that you will love the experience and will become addicted to the exhilarating feeling that it provides.

Get Naked Australia began as a social media platform as a way for people to share their #nakedinnature images and stories. As you have probably seen, there are plenty of people who have experienced this awesome feeling and used it as a way to overcome their body image issues. I’ll admit, not every photo or story we share is a life changing experience for people, but I want people to observe the Get Naked Australia Instagram, Facebook and webpage and see normal everyday people naked in nature having fun, and not caring what society thinks of them. I want you to be encouraged to get outside, explore your surroundings and if the moment presents itself, give it a go! You will feel amazing.

It's not just about getting a photo to post on social media either. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone, feeling the natural elements on your bare skin and learning to realise that being naked is no big deal, except in our own minds. If you do want to get an awesome snap as many have done, then unless you are extremely talented with your iphone self timer, someone else is normally there to capture the moment. Yes, this means that at the very least someone will see your butt. Do you really think your friend is going to point laugh and judge you for having a bum that’s too large, too skinny or too dimply? Of course not! So don’t feel ashamed, have fun and have a laugh. Our page is full of normal people who are thin, large, young and old. There are love handles, pimples, dimples and hair in places where people don’t want them. No one is perfect and where are out to show you that. You will not see photo shopped models on Get Naked Australia.

The naked in nature concept has helped many, many people overcome their body image problems so far and helped people engage in outdoor nudity as just a bit of fun, the way that it should be. Remember, when finding a scenic location to shed your clothes and inhibitions, make sure it is not too public where some people may take offence, it is illegal to be naked in public after all. However in remote locations the likelihood of this happening is minimal. I have been busted many times by other adventurous people on hikes and such and have been given thumbs up, smiles and even been applauded. People aren’t as prudish as you think and I think this demonstrates that people are seeing nudity in a different light. We have a long way to go, but this movement is growing rapidly. Help us spread the word and if you are up for it, take the plunge and share with us your story, we love to hear anything that involves body positivity.
